Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of depression in the relationship between social withdrawal, depression, and achievement motivation in multicultural adolescents, and to examine whether self-esteem regulates the mediating relationship between social withdrawal and achievement motivation. To this end, a research model with social withdrawal as a leading variable, achievement motivation as a result variable, depression as a mediating variable, and self-esteem as a moderating variable was set up, and this was to be verified. To achieve the purpose of this study, the data of a total of 1,197 adolescents who participated in the 8th year (2018) survey of the ¡°Multicultural Adolescent Panel Study(MAPS)¡± surveyed by the National Youth Policy Institute were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 and SPSS Macro 3.3. As a result of the analysis, first, social withdrawal was found to have a significant negative effect on achievement motivation. Second, while social withdrawal had a significant effect on achievement motivation, depression was found to mediate these relationships. Third, it was found that self-esteem controls the indirect effect that social withdrawal influences achievement motivation through depression, indicating that there is a moderated mediating effect. The significance, implications and limitations of these research results, and suggestions for subsequent research were discussed.
